Fiscal Responsibility
Punta Gorda residents have felt the burden of skyrocketing taxes over the past two years, despite a substantial increase in taxable values. Jeannine advocates for transparency and accountability, challenging our leaders’ decision to maintain a millage rate of 3.95 mills for 2024, despite the city’s unprecedented taxable values.

Punta Gorda Infrastructure and Development Issues
Flooding In Punta Gorda
Within the historic neighborhood of Punta Gorda, and throughout the downtown business district, there is uncontrolled flooding from an unreliable and outdated storm drain system. The main roads, which are also evacuation routes, are the first streets to flood during a 2’ high tide with heavy rainfall. It is, without question, time for the storm drain defects in Punta Gorda to be rectified. Business owners and homeowners alike bear the brunt of the flooding with out-of-pocket costs that financially cause irreparable harm. We cannot ignore this problem any longer.
The street closest to the harbor, Retta Esplanade, does not flood, as it has been raised over the years; however, the streets that run perpendicular to and parallel to Retta Esplanade quickly fill with saltwater from the storm drain system. This is a tremendous burden to those living in the historic district, and for those who own businesses in the downtown core.

Development Experience
Jeannine and Mike Polk have developed commercial properties within Charlotte County with partners, therefore she is familiar with development. At one point, they developed, owned and operated over 24,000 SF of retail and office space.
“I believe continued commercial development is critical to our future and am very much in favor of it, yet development can’t be forced, and it must be compatible with the existing Punta Gorda charm. High density and 100’+ building regulations will not guarantee development. It’s pertinent our leaders understand the current market conditions when making decisions about land development regulations and what is feasible versus what is not.” Jeannine Polk
Improving the Use of Parks
Physical activity can reduce or prevent many physical and mental health problems. Parks also reduce the costs of healthcare. With the population in our city being mostly retired citizens, it is pertinent we allow taxpayers the full use of our facilities. Pickleball and tennis courts located within our parks enhance our city and have the potential to increase revenue. We should encourage the use of our parks, to the fullest extent.
